Epidemiology (48 SCH)
The Master of Public Health program with a concentration in Epidemiology provides students with a foundation in the major public health concepts and the necessary tools to apply the core functions of epidemiology in practice, including public health surveillance, field investigations, and analytic studies. During the program, students will apply the knowledge and skills obtained to work collaboratively with professionals in practice to solve real-world, pressing issues and convert data into actions to improve the health of populations. Graduates of the program will be prepared to work as epidemiologists in local, state, and national public health settings, non-profit organizations, and healthcare settings. The program’s comprehensive curriculum provides students with the knowledge base to continue to doctoral-level studies.
Students in the Epidemiology concentration are admitted once a year in the Fall semester as a cohort, completing 48 hours of curriculum to graduate in five consecutive semesters. Students attend classes and co-curricular activities on campus, which are typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM.
Electives
Students will work with their advisor to select two 3 credit hour elective courses from the approved elective list.
MPH Practice Experience
All MPH students are required to complete a Public Health practice experience internship. This requirement is based upon the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation.
This course provides opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience addressing MPH foundation and concentration-specific competencies, as well as achieve multiple accreditation requirements for applied practice and integrative learning experiences. Students commit to a three-semester experience with a qualified site supervisor and practice setting that promotes the synthesis and application of MPH competencies. Students are required to complete two products that utilize MPH competencies and make a meaningful contribution to their internship site. The internship is supervised by an HSC instructor of record as well as an internship site supervisor.
Prerequisite: Students must be in good academic standing with the university and have completed all required courses during the first year cohort program or have completed at least 21 SCH as an online student. Students must successfully complete tasks in the zero-credit hour Pre-PHED 5297 canvas course prior to enrolling in the three course practice experience sequence.
