RN to BSN Qualifications to Apply:
- RN licensure (submitted as part of NursingCAS) in a state or region that is approved through the National Council of Boards of Nursing, or evidence of eligibility for RN licensure within one year with required evidence of an unencumbered RN licensure prior to graduation.
- Completion of or enrollment in an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN, ASN) or diploma program from a regionally accredited institution.
- Provisional or Conditional Admission may be granted in the following conditions:
- Individuals who are actively enrolled in an ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) or diploma program from a regionally accredited institution and are in good standing may receive provisional/conditional admissions to this program.
- Provisionally admitted students may enroll in up to 6 semester credit hours (SCH) in the RN to BSN program before completing their ADN or diploma program and presenting evidence of passing the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). However, provisionally admitted students will not progress to any other BSN program courses within the College of Nursing without first passing the NCLEX-RN and obtaining an active, unencumbered RN license in a state or region that is approved through the National Council of Boards of Nursing.
- Upon licensure as a registered nurse (and meeting all other admission requirements), the student will receive unconditional admission to proceed in the program.
- Completion of 42 semester credit hours from the Texas Core Curriculum.
- Completion of required College of Nursing prerequisites with a grade of “C” or better by time of enrollment (some may count toward being Texas Core Complete).
RN to BSN Academic Prerequisites:
- Anatomy & Physiology I (must include lab) - 4 SCH
- Anatomy & Physiology II (must include lab) - 4 SCH
- Microbiology (must include lab) - 4 SCH
- Nutrition - 3 SCH
- Introduction to Psychology - 3 SCH
- Lifespan Growth and Development - 3 SCH
- Statistics - (any college level of at least 3 SCH)*
- U.S. History I - 3 SCH
- U.S. History II - 3 SCH
- U.S. Government - 3 SCH
- Texas Government - 3 SCH
- English Composition I (or equivalent) - 3 SCH
- English Composition II or Technical Writing (or equivalent) - 3 SCH
- Creative Arts - 3 SCH
- Language, Philosophy, and Culture - 3 SCH
- Free Electives - 12 SCH
* The statistics course may be taken in any academic discipline; course content should include descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, sampling techniques, measures of relationship, regression models, and other tests for significance.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all prerequisite courses.
- Individuals who earned an associate’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited community college will be awarded 30 semester credit hours toward the RN-BSN.
- Favorable criminal background check.
- Negative drug screening.
- Out-of-state applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with the Board of Nursing regulations.
- The ability to meet minimum Technical (non-academic) Standards.
MSN in Nursing Practice Innovation Qualifications to Apply:
- A bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from a regionally accredited institution with a nursing program accredited from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the American Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
- Evidence of passing the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) prior to starting their MSN coursework and documentation of clinical experience as a nurse. An active, unencumbered RN license may serve as evidence.
- Evidence of an active, unencumbered RN license in a state or region that is approved through the National Council of Boards of Nursing.
- Completion of a college level statistics course (3 SCH). The course may be taken in any academic discipline; course content should include descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, sampling techniques, measures of relationship, regression models, and other tests for significance.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 credit hours of the BSN program.
- Favorable criminal background check.
- Negative drug screening.
- Out-of-state applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with the Board of Nursing regulations.
- The ability to meet minimum Health and Technical Standards.
Requirements For a Complete Application to the College of Nursing:
- All applicants are required to submit two current or former faculty or employer references (submitted as part of NursingCAS).
- Professional resume or curriculum vitae (CV) (submitted as part of NursingCAS).
- Official transcripts (unofficial not accepted) (submitted as part of NursingCAS).
- A complete $50 HSC application processing fee in addition to any fees charged by NursingCAS.
Admission Procedures:
Applications are considered on a rolling basis once all requirements to apply are met. Applications will undergo a holistic review. Documents submitted outside of NursingCAS will not be accepted unless an applicant has been specfically requested by the HSC to do so. Upon acceptance, incoming students will be required to submit official transcripts for any coursework or degrees not completed at the point of application to NursingCAS. A transcript must include all coursework with final grades/credit awarded and degrees earned to be considered complete.

- Provisional admission can be offered to applicants with a GPA that falls between 2.85 and 2.99. Students admitted under provisional status must achieve a 3.0 GPA in the first three courses of the major to progress in the graduate program.
