Ayesha Akhtarmalik Endowed Scholarship
Ayesha Akhtarmalik, a Medical Science student in the School of Biomedical Sciences, passed away on November 18, 2020. Although she found her previous experience with bench research to be thrilling, Ayesha was always passionate about the practice of medicine. Ayesha was a hospice volunteer and worked with Doctors without Borders, serving the doctors and nurses providing health care to the more than 3 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Her generosity, kind spirit, and passion for health care will live on in the lives she touched around the world, as well as here at HSC through a scholarship created in her honor. The Ayesha Akhtarmalik Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving Medical Science student who demonstrates a commitment to social justice and the advancement of health equity.
Rachel M. Dauphin Memorial Scholarship
The Rachel M. Dauphin Memorial Scholarship honors Rachel M. Dauphin, a graduate student who courageously fought Hodgkin’s disease. This scholarship will be offered to students seeking a degree through SBS, shows academic achievement, and volunteerism. Applications are solicited from SBS student body each year and are open to all SBS students regardless of citizenship or residency. To be eligible, students must have completed the first year of graduate study. The $1,000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Patricia Gwirtz Endowed Scholarship
Patricia Gwirtz, PhD, served as a member of the HSC faculty for 38 years. She taught physiology and conducted bench research on neural control in coronary circulation and heart function. As an educator and advocate, she had a tremendous impact on countless HSC students. As Associate Dean for Biomedical Education, she is credited with building the Medical Science program to national prominence. Dr. Gwirtz was devoted to serving her community, especially through Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Tarrant County. Upon her retirement in 2020, the Patricia Gwirtz Endowed Scholarship was established to honor her contributions and to provide support for Medical Science students with strong academic backgrounds, interest in research, and commitment to community service.
Ben Harris Memorial Scholarship
The Ben Harris, Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship honors one of our first faculty members. A member of the faculty since 1968, Dr. Harris was also one of the first Health Science Center faculty members to receive the honor of Regents Professor by the UNT System Board of Regents. His research interests focused on the biochemistry and enzymology of parasitic helminthes. This scholarship will be awarded to a SBS student in good academic standing who is engaged in scholarly activity such as research publications and/or presentations. Preference will be given to Biochemistry and Cancer Biology majors. The $1,000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Levine Scholarship
The Levine Scholarship is open to all students. Recipients will be chosen based on GPA and financial need. Students must be in compliance with financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements. Preference is given to students who have not received any other HSC general scholarship. The $1,000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Brian Molles Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Brian Molles was a lifelong biomedical researcher, educator and entrepreneur. As a father of three and a dedicated mentor, he spent much of his time working with the next generation of health professionals. He worked to foster diversity and inclusion in his personal and professional life. His family established this scholarship to honor both his passion for science and the friendship shown by his friends at HSC and the previous laboratories where he worked. Recipients of the Brian Molles Memorial Endowed Scholarship would exemplify his character, journey and core values, including supporting diversity and inclusion in the training and mentoring of new biomedical scientists; performing innovative, translational research that solves problems for real people; and promoting a healthy work life balance such that the recipient may also wrap their academic achievements in loving family moments.
Wordinger Scholarship in the Visual Sciences
A memorial scholarship honoring the memories of Reverend Barbara Wordinger and Professor Robert J. Wordinger, PhD, has been established in the Visual Sciences within the North Texas Eye Research Institute. Applications are solicited from students in SBS regardless of citizenship or residency who meet the following criteria: full-time enrollment during the award period, classification as a Visual Sciences major, proven ability in research, demonstration of excellent academic achievement, and personal integrity. The $1,000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Elena and Thomas Yorio Scholarship for First-Year Students
The Elena and Thomas Yorio Scholarship for First-Year Students was created to support first-year School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) students who show leadership experience and potential, a personal commitment to graduate education, and research and personal integrity. The award was named to honor the contributions to the success of SBS by founding dean, Dr. Thomas Yorio, and his wife, Elena, who, throughout the years, have made outstanding contributions and a tremendous impression on the campus and students. Full-time first-year SBS students are considered for the scholarship. Students entering the summer or fall of the academic year are eligible. The scholarship is open to SBS first-year students regardless of citizenship or residency. The $1,000 award is paid directly to each recipient’s student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
