Elena and Thomas Yorio Scholarship for First-Year Students
The Elena and Thomas Yorio Scholarship for First-Year Students was created to support first-year Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) students who show leadership experience and potential, a personal commitment to graduate education, and research and personal integrity. The award was named to honor the contributions to the success of GSBS by founding dean, Dr. Thomas Yorio, and his wife, Elena, who, throughout the years, have made outstanding contributions and a tremendous impression on the campus and students. Full-time first-year GSBS students are considered for the scholarship. Students entering the summer or fall of the academic year are eligible. The scholarship is open to GSBS first-year students regardless of citizenship or residency. The $1000 award is paid directly to each recipient’s student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Rachel M. Dauphin Memorial Scholarship
The Rachel M. Dauphin Memorial Scholarship honors Rachel M. Dauphin, a graduate student who courageously fought Hodgkin’s disease. This scholarship will be offered to students seeking a degree through GSBS, shows academic achievement, and volunteerism. Applications are solicited from GSBS student body each year and are open to all GSBS students regardless of citizenship or residency. To be eligible, students must have completed the first year of graduate study. The $1000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
GSBS Division of Student Affairs Scholarship
The Division of Student Affairs sponsors a scholarship for GSBS students. Recipients will be chosen based on GPA and financial need. Students must be in compliance with financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements. Preference is given to students who have not received any other UNTHSC general scholarship. The $1000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
GSBS Levine Scholarship
The Levine Scholarship is open to all students. Recipients will be chosen based on GPA and financial need. Students must be in compliance with financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements. Preference is given to students who have not received any other UNTHSC general scholarship. The $1000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Arthur J. Eisenberg Scholarship
Arthur J. Eisenberg, Ph.D. joined the faculty of UNT Health Science Center in 1989, where he was a trailblazer in DNA identification. He developed many of the procedures, techniques and quality control standards used in DNA identity testing in laboratories and helped build a state-of-the-art clinical reference laboratory that uses DNA testing for paternity cases, forensic analysis, missing person identification and genetic diseases. In a career that spanned more than three decades, Dr. Eisenberg has worked on cases involving serial killers, mass graves, hurricanes, terrorist attacks and all manner of violent crimes. Under his leadership, the UNT Center for Human Identification has processed more than 5,200 human remains, making more than 1,500 DNA associations that led to identifications. In addition, the Center has analyzed more than 14,400 family reference samples, representing more than 8,000 missing person cases. Perhaps his greatest legacy, however, is the establishment of the Master of Science program in Forensic Genetics, ensuring that the science he pioneered will carry on for generations to come. The Arthur J. Eisenberg Scholarship was created upon his retirement in 2017 and will be awarded to an incoming student in the Forensic Genetics program each year. With demonstration of satisfactory academic progress, the scholarship is renewable for the second year of study in the program. The $1000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Ben Harris Memorial Scholarship
The Ben Harris, Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship honors one of our first faculty members. A member of the faculty since 1968, Dr. Harris was also one of the first UNT Health Science Center faculty members to receive the honor of Regents Professor by the UNT System Board of Regents. His research interests focused on the biochemistry and enzymology of parasitic helminthes. This scholarship will be awarded to a GSBS student in good academic standing who is engaged in scholarly activity such as research publications and/or presentations. Preference will be given to Biochemistry and Cancer Biology majors. The $1000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Neurobiology of Aging Fellowship
The Neurobiology of Aging Training Program is sponsored by the Institute for Healthy Aging and funded through the National Institute on Aging. Fellows are selected on the basis of their academic strengths and interest/commitment to the study of the Neurobiology of Aging. Predoctoral fellows will receive a stipend and funds to support training related expenses including travel to a national conference. The Neurobiology of Aging fellowship includes a scholarship of at least $1,000. An out-of-state student selected as a recipient of this award who is not entitled to pay in-state tuition for any other reason, such as a graduate assistantship, will qualify for a scholarship waiver to pay in-state tuition. Applications are solicited from all doctoral students in GSBS, regardless of residency (U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only). The scholarship award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Graduate Student Association Scholarship
The Graduate Student Association Scholarship supports students enrolled in the GSBS who demonstrate significant academic performance, research aptitude, community service, campus involvement and financial need. Applications are solicited from GSBS student body each year and are open to all GSBS students regardless of citizenship or residency who meet the following criteria: full time and continuous enrollment during the award period, minimum 3.0 GPA, and completion of the first year core requirements. The $1000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
Wordinger Scholarship in the Visual Sciences
A memorial scholarship honoring the memories of Reverend Barbara Wordinger and Professor Robert J. Wordinger, PhD, has been established in the Visual Sciences within the North Texas Eye Research Institute. Applications are solicited from students in GSBS regardless of citizenship or residency who meet the following criteria: full-time enrollment during the award period, classification as a Visual Sciences major, proven ability in research, demonstration of excellent academic achievement, and personal integrity. The $1000 award is paid directly to the student account and qualifies an out-of-state resident to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
