Certificate in Genetics and Genomics for Healthcare Professionals

The nature of genetic medicine is changing rapidly, with primary care practitioners on the front lines of genomic medicine applications. However, the education and training of current healthcare professionals have not prepared many practitioners to meet the growing demand for genetic testing in medical practice. In fact, there is a disconnect between what patients expect from their primary care provider and what primary care providers are comfortable and capable of providing.

There is a growing demand for genetic services. To fill this need, current healthcare providers from a variety of specialties will require additional education and training. Individuals in primary care have indicated an increased interest in additional genetic training. Here we describe a certificate program that provides a basic competency in genetic and genomic medicine for current and future healthcare practitioners.

Program Objectives

The program will provide education on the following topics, foundations in genetics, clinical applications of genetics, and current trends in genetics. At the completion of the certificate
students will be able to:

  • Relate the molecular organization of the genome and genetic expression to human disease processes.
  • Evaluate population genetics in the context of human migration and disease.
  • Evaluate the process of genetic analysis in order to choose the most appropriate testing methodologies.
  • Determine how genetics is utilized in medicine today.
  • Evaluate current and future trends in genomic/precision medicine.

Academic Requirements

  • Completion of bachelors degree or higher
  • Demonstrated interest in biological sciences and/or healthcare profession
  • Proficiency in English

Application Procedures

  • Complete online application
  • Submit official transcripts from any university or college attended
  • Statement of interest
