PHAN 5301 Structural Anatomy

3 SCH. The study of human gross anatomy is basic to the science and practice of medicine and other health professions. This course is designed to provide you with a practical, working knowledge of the structures of the human body. A solid overview of the gross anatomy of the musculoskeletal system, thoracic region, abdominal region, and head & neck will provide participating graduate students with a comprehensive understanding of the structure and function of the human body. These topics will be taught in five separate modules titled: 1) Superficial Back and Upper Limb, 2) Deep Back and Lower Limb, 3) Thorax, 4) Abdomen, and 5) Head and Neck.

The course consists of both lecture and laboratory sessions. In the lecture sessions, information will be presented at a level that will support basic working concepts of structure and function. Lectures will be recorded and provided to students through the Canvas site. Laboratory sessions will consist of images of cadaveric material, models, x-rays, and cross sectional anatomy. You will learn the basic “language” of anatomy as you work through lecture and laboratory material. More importantly, you will develop the ability of observation and reasoning from that observation to make a conclusion. Both lecture and laboratory sessions will be correlated with the clinical significance of the material resented.
