BACH 5335 Issues In Mental Health and Mental Illness 3 SCH. This course introduces students to public health perspectives on mental health and mental illness. The course focuses on conceptions of mental health and illness, and the social and policy factors that sustain the inadequate system of care for persons with serious mental illness. Students will learn about the consequences of mental illness; the history of deinstitutionalization in the United States; the role of psychotherapeutic medications in contemporary treatment; the relationships between mental illness, homelessness, poverty, and the myths and prejudices associated with mental illness. Prerequisite: Student must complete BACH 5300 or obtain permission of the instructor. Offered Spring Letter Grade
