DO/MPH

DO students can attain a combined DO/MPH degree by completing the requirements for the MPH - Professional Option degree, a 42 credit hour program offered online.  The MPH degree is completed entirely via an online curriculum, and thus can be achieved concurrent with the DO curriculum.  Application for and entrance into the MPH degree can be made throughout the academic year.  This includes the potential to enter the MPH program prior to matriculating into the DO curriculum once accepted into the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine for the DO curriculum.  The MPH Admission Requirements listed in the School of Public Health must be met before acceptance into the program.  Once accepted, the student will meet with a graduate advisor from the School of Public Health to develop a degree plan.

Block 1

Block 1 consists of the preclinical years for the DO degree. During Block 1, the student will complete the first three years of the DO curriculum and must pass Part 1 and Part 2 of the College of Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX). During this block, the student will take courses within the TCOM curriculum. Additionally, the student will take MPH required courses, preferably one at a time (there are five, eight-week online terms offered in an academic year). Students will take coursework as suggested by a meeting with their assigned SPH Academic Advisor. TCOM students are responsible to register themselves for all SPH classes. An exception to these rules may be made only with the approval of the Dual Degree Program advisory committee, the Dean of TCOM, and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs of the School of Public Health (SPH).

During Block 1, the coursework completed within the TCOM curriculum will count for 12 credit hours of elective credit for the MPH degree as determined by the SPH Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Block 2

During Block 2, the student will complete the required clinical rotations. During this block, the student may also continue work toward completion of the MPH degree as necessary. At the end of Block 2, the student is expected to have completed the curriculum required for the DO degree and to have completed the required courses according to the SPH degree plan. Following completion of the curricula required for both degrees, the student is awarded the DO degree through TCOM and the MPH degree through SPH.
