3 SCH. This course will provide a foundational overview of the role of pharmacology and toxicology in the various stages of the drug discovery process. Student will learn how to analyze and interpret drug-receptor interactions, signal transduction, and receptor function in simple and complex systems. Students will be taught the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, including the importance of dose as it relates to toxicology and drug therapy. Students will learn the mechanisms of action of major drug classes. Applying these principles will enable students to demonstrate comprehension of pharmacotherapy with regard to human physiology and major organ system function. Through assignments, quizzes, and exams that cover the aforementioned topics and evaluating literature, developing hypotheses, executing research, and interpreting results, students will be asked to display critical and analytical thinking.
