Osteopathic Research Center

The Osteopathic Research Center (ORC) was established in 2002 to serve as the profession-wide research center for osteopathic medicine. The original mission of the ORC was to conduct research on mechanistic and clinical aspects of osteopathic manipulative treatment. In so doing, the ORC provided important evidence through systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials, including the OSTEOPATHIC Trial.

The ORC continues its research on spinal manipulation by participating in the landmark National Institutes of Health study, “Spinal Manipulation and Patient-Self Management for Preventing Acute to Chronic Back Pain (PACBACK) Trial.”

The ORC mission also has evolved to address primary care issues. A major focus now involves the Pain Registry for Epidemiological, Clinical and Interventional Studies and Innovation (PRECISION Pain Research Registry) to study the natural history of pain, and to assess prevention and treatment options based on the biopsychosocial model and emerging aspects of precision medicine.

Through the registry, clinical data and biological samples are collected from participants to study DNA sequences and other biomarkers in relation to the nation’s opioid crisis. Our research team is working with patients, research collaborators, and other agencies to achieve the registry’s vision of “a future for all unbounded by pain.”
