Master Plan: Growing Facilities

The project next in line to continue implementation of the long-term master facilities plan for the Health Science Center is the 5-story, 173,000 gross square foot Interdisciplinary Research and Education Building located at 3430 Camp Bowie Blvd. Construction for the project began in October 2016 and is scheduled for substantial completion in November 2018.

The first floor of the new facility will be home to a two-story open-volume lobby space which will sit directly adjacent to and showcase the new Healthcare Innovations Lab for the College of Pharmacy. On the first floor you will also find a full-service kitchen and café space, student lounge, a 10,000-square-foot vivarium, and an open-concept core preparatory laboratory.

The second floor of the building will include two large active learning style classrooms, two medium active learning style classrooms, one small active learning style classroom, and 10 collaboration rooms for student breakout sessions and small-group use.

Floors 3, 4 and 5 will host six large open-format interdisciplinary research laboratories bordered by ample research support space and directly adjacent to faculty and staff offices.

The construction of the new facility will also serve to improve the outdoor experience at the site by providing outdoor plazas with site furnishings on both the north and south sides of the building as well as open green space on the southeast corner of the site at the corner of Camp Bowie Boulevard and Darcy Street.

The renovated Student Services Center Building debuted in November 2015 and is located at 1051 Haskell. The Student Services Center is a two-story, 27,000 gross square foot facility that provides student service functions that include admissions for all five colleges, all Student Affairs departments, and Student Financials in one convenient location.

Established in 2014, the UNTHSC Community Garden was founded by the Office of Sustainability within Facilities Management.  It is an organic garden comprised of 35 plots gardened by students, staff, faculty, and community members.  Twenty-five percent of the produce is donated to a local food bank or our own student pantry. The garden is located on campus at 3621 W. Seventh Street.

Opening in 2017, the Child Development Center will provide nursery through pre-K child care for students, faculty, and staff of the Health Science Center.
